The hockey tournament that became a proxy for North American political tension
In short: In February 2025, the 4 Nations Face-Off replaced the NHL All-Star Game with something much more intense. Amidst threats of US tariffs and annexation rhetoric, a simple ice hockey tournament transformed into a high-stakes arena of national identity and political defiance.
Between February 12 and 20, 2025, the 4 Nations Face-Off showcased NHL talent from the United States, Sweden, Finland, and Canada. While hosted by the NHL in Montreal and Boston, the tournament was far from a mere exhibition. It took place against a backdrop of significant political friction between Canada and the United States, fueled by President Donald Trump’s calls for the annexation of Canada and proposed tariffs.
The atmosphere in the arenas mirrored the geopolitical tension. During a round-robin game in Montreal, fans booed the American anthem, and in the Boston final, the Canadian anthem met similar treatment. Musical lyrics reflected this friction; Chantal Kreviazuk modified the Canadian anthem to feature 'that only us command' rather than 'in all of us command', reacting to annexation threats.
Despite the political noise, the competition was elite. Canada ultimately defeated the United States 3–2 in an overtime final. The tournament's impact was massive, with the championship game drawing an average of 9.3 million viewers in the US, making it the fourth-highest rated NHL telecast in history. For players like Canada's coach Jon Cooper, the victory felt like more than a sporting achievement, representing a win for 40 million people.
The tournament's roster was not without controversy. While top-ranked teams like Finland and Sweden participated, Germany was excluded due to a lack of NHL players, and Russia was barred due to the ongoing war in Ukraine. Because other major hockey nations were left out, some reporters questioned if the event truly achieved a 'best-on-best' status.
