A femme fatale’s quest for love leads to seven husbands and seven deadly ends.
In short: In the 2011 black comedy 7 Khoon Maaf, Susanna Anna-Marie Johannes seeks the perfect partner, only to find that each of her seven husbands harbors a fatal flaw. Based on a novella by Ruskin Bond, this dark exploration of love and betrayal follows one woman’s lethal path to finding peace.
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, 7 Khoon Maaf originated from a four-page short story by Ruskin Bond titled Susanna's Seven Husbands. Intrigued by the premise of a woman who murders her husbands, Bhardwaj commissioned Bond to expand the narrative into an 80-page novella, which eventually evolved into a 200-page screenplay. The film serves as a dark allegory, with each husband representing a different vice, such as envy, gluttony, and wrath. While the film remains faithful to the essence of Bond's work, Bhardwaj incorporated his own creative liberties, including the addition of a police inspector character as an homage to Bond’s recurring tropes.
Priyanka Chopra portrays the protagonist, Susanna, aging from 20 to 65 throughout the film. To achieve this transformation, the production enlisted Hollywood makeup artist Greg Cannom, known for his work on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The process was physically demanding, requiring five hours for prosthetic application and restricting the actress from eating or drinking during filming. The film’s production was equally complex, involving locations across Kashmir, Delhi, Coorg, and Russia, often requiring two-tier security coverage due to regional unrest.
Upon its release on 18 February 2011, the film received widespread critical acclaim, particularly for Chopra’s performance. It premiered at the 61st Berlin International Film Festival and earned ₹33 crore against a production budget of ₹15 crore. The narrative concludes with a twist: Susanna, having failed to find love in mortal men, ultimately turns to a spiritual union, effectively making Jesus Christ her seventh and final husband. This resolution offers a stark contrast to the violent, earthly ends met by her previous spouses, grounding the film’s dark comedy in a final, ironic search for redemption.
