In short: To join this elite statistical fraternity, a player must maintain exceptional accuracy across three distinct disciplines: field goals, three-pointers, and free throws. It is a rare feat that demands sustained precision throughout an entire regular season, separating the league's most consistent marksmen from the rest of the professional field.

The 50–40–90 benchmark requires a player to hit at least 50% of their total field goals, 40% of their shots from behind the arc, and 90% of their free throws. This standard only became possible after the NBA introduced the three-point line in the 1979–80 season. To qualify, players must also meet specific volume thresholds, ensuring their high percentages are not merely the result of limited attempts. For instance, the league typically mandates a minimum of 300 total field goals, 82 three-pointers, and 125 free throws, though these requirements have evolved; Dirk Nowitzki, for example, qualified in 2007 when the three-point minimum was only 55.

While the NBA reports these figures as rounded percentages, the official calculation is precise to the thousandth. This nuance is critical, as demonstrated by Steve Nash in the 2006–07 season. Nash finished with an 89.9% free-throw rate, missing the 90% threshold by a single made shot. Despite this, Nash remains one of only three players, alongside Larry Bird and Kevin Durant, to achieve the feat multiple times. Nash holds the record for four such seasons, all occurring between 2005 and 2010.

The club is incredibly small, with only 12 professional players across the NBA, WNBA, and G League ever reaching the mark. Stephen Curry stands out for his unique combination of volume and efficiency, becoming the only member to lead the league in scoring while maintaining these splits during his 2015–16 campaign. Meanwhile, the achievement has expanded beyond the NBA, with Elena Delle Donne becoming the first WNBA player to qualify in 2019, and Napheesa Collier becoming the most recent addition in 2025. At the collegiate level, the standard is even more rigorous for some, with players like Salim Stoudamire and Matt Kennedy having recorded 50–50–90 seasons.
