The competitive pendulum has swung violently over the decades. By 1980, the Rams led the series by as many as 22 games. However, the 49ers responded with a dominant era, including a 17-game winning streak between 1990 and 1998. This period included a 30–3 victory for San Francisco in the 1989 NFC Championship Game, though the Rams would later avenge such losses, such as their 42–20 blowout in 1999 fueled by players like Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt.

The intensity is often fueled by more than just scoreboard tallies. The rivalry has seen physical altercations, such as Aaron Donald punching Blaine Gabbert in 2016, and personal friction, including Matthew Stafford's wife throwing a drink at a fan in 2021. Even when the Rams were in St. Louis, 49ers players like Roger Craig maintained that the rivalry was unbreakable. Today, the return of the Rams to Los Angeles in 2016 has restored the geographic tension, making it one of the most storied matchups in professional football.
