The producer who crafted a hit beat in just 25 minutes
In short: In the high-stakes world of hip-hop, speed can be as vital as soul. When Jay-Z handed a sample to an up-and-coming producer at Baseline Studios, the resulting track was finished in less than half an hour. This moment didn't just launch a career; it redefined production.
In 2003, Patrick Denard Douthit—known professionally as 9th Wonder—experienced a pivotal turning point at Baseline Studios in New York. After being introduced to the studio by filmmaker Theron Smith and engineer Gimel "Young Guru" Keaton, Jay-Z gave him a sample and left the room. Using FL Studio on an IBM ThinkPad, Douthit crafted the beat for the track "Threat" in approximately 25 minutes. The song appeared on Jay-Z's 'The Black Album' in November 2003, featuring a diverse roster of heavyweights like Kanye West and Eminem.
Douthit’s rise was built on a foundation of technical mastery and academic curiosity. He began his career as the primary producer for the group Little Brother, releasing their critically acclaimed debut 'The Listening' in 2003. His early work also included an unofficial remix album of Nas' 'God's Son,' which is credited with sparking the modern trend of "home-made" full-album remixes. Beyond the studio, Douthit has become a leading scholar of the genre, holding fellowships at Harvard and teaching courses on hip-hop history and production at Duke University, Wake Forest University, and Long Island University.
His influence spans from mainstream pop to jazz fusion, producing for artists as varied as Destiny's Child, Drake, and Kamasi Washington. He even formed the supergroup Dinner Party in 2020 with Terrace Martin, Robert Glasper, and Kamasi Washington. Despite his commercial success, Douthit remains deeply rooted in his North Carolina origins, eventually returning to North Carolina Central University in 2026 to complete a degree he first began pursuing over two decades prior.
