Documenting the daily lives of modern Mongolians in the year 2000

A dinner with Puji, a Mongolian business man, and Black Market (2000) · 39:34 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: In 2000, researchers captured raw footage of life across the Mongolian steppes to prepare for a major museum exhibition. This collection offers a rare, unedited glimpse into the diverse experiences of Mongolian citizens, including an intimate look at a local businessman's home life.

During the summer of 2000, Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff led a film crew, including Tom Gillern and Heather Marshall, to Mongolia. Using mini DV technology, they recorded extensive interviews and scenes of daily life to provide context for the Penn Museum exhibition, Modern Mongolia, Reclaiming Genghis Khan, which opened in 2001.

The footage captures a wide range of backgrounds, including a dinner at the apartment of a businessman named Puji. These unedited tapes, paired with onsite metadata, serve as a primary record of Mongolian lifestyles at the turn of the millennium, documenting both urban settings and the traditional steppes.
