Capturing the reality of modern Mongolian nomadic life at the turn of the millennium

Mongolia, Gonchigdorj Interview: Part 2 of 2 (with B-roll) (2000/08/22) · 36:34 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: In the summer of 2000, researchers traveled to the Mongolian steppes to document the daily lives of nomads. This footage offers an unedited look at a culture in transition, providing the foundation for a major museum exhibition focused on reclaiming the legacy of Genghis Khan.

Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff, accompanied by Tom Gillern and Heather Marshall, conducted extensive interviews with Mongolians from diverse backgrounds during the summer of 2000. Using mini DV cameras, the team recorded life on the steppes to provide a comprehensive overview of contemporary nomadic lifestyles.

These recordings served as primary research for the Penn Museum exhibition titled Modern Mongolia, Reclaiming Genghis Khan, which debuted in 2001. The collection preserves the raw, onsite perspectives of people living in Mongolia at the start of the 21st century.
