Capturing the daily lives of modern Mongolian nomads at the turn of the millennium

Mongolia, Interview with Enkhee and Shots of the Onon River (2000) · 49:22 · Video: Penn Museum · Watch at the source

In short: In 2000, researchers documented the realities of life on the Mongolian steppes. This footage provides a rare, unedited glimpse into the diverse experiences of local people, offering context for how a nation reconnected with its historical identity during a period of significant cultural transition.

During the summer of 2000, an academic team led by Dr. Paula L.W. Sabloff visited Mongolia to record interviews and environmental footage. The project was designed to support a future exhibition at the Penn Museum titled Modern Mongolia, Reclaiming Genghis Khan. By filming various individuals—including guides and local residents—the team aimed to create a comprehensive record of contemporary nomadic lifestyles.

The collection features raw, unedited video captured by Tom Gillern and Heather Marshall using mini DV technology. Beyond the interviews, the footage includes visual documentation of the Mongolian landscape, specifically the Onon River region. These archives serve as a primary record of the social and geographical conditions in Mongolia at the start of the 21st century.
