In short: Before he was a prominent voice in the TDE collective, Herbert Anthony Stevens IV faced a grueling battle with Stevens–Johnson syndrome. The condition, which struck him at age 10, left lasting physical marks that would become a defining part of his identity and public persona.

Born in Los Angeles on February 23, 1987, the rapper known as Ab-Soul spent his early years in Korea while his father served in the military. His musical foundation was built in a family-owned record store, but his technical rhyming skills were forged in the digital trenches of 'keystyle'—a form of freestyle rapping via text battles on BlackPlanet.

A pivotal moment in his childhood occurred at age 10 when he contracted Stevens–Johnson syndrome. This condition resulted in hospitalization and left him with permanent physical traits, including light-sensitive eyes and dark lips. These features became a source of severe teasing during his adolescence, yet they remain a distinct part of his appearance today.

By age 12, Stevens was already writing verses to the beat of Twista's 'Emotions.' His rise through the hip-hop ranks eventually led him to sign with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2007. There, he became a key member of the Black Hippy supergroup alongside Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, and Jay Rock. While his label-mates achieved massive mainstream success, Ab-Soul has remained an independent artist within the TDE roster.

His discography reflects a journey of intense personal and creative evolution. His 2012 album, Control System, was deeply influenced by the tragic loss of his longtime girlfriend, Alori Joh, who died by suicide in February 2012. The album, dedicated to her, debuted at number 83 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 5,300 units in its first week.
