From a slave-like contract in Qatar to a South African treble
In short: Abdeslam Ouaddou’s football career is defined by extreme contrasts: from being trapped in Qatar under conditions he described as slavery, to becoming a champion in South Africa. His journey reveals the dark side of sports labor and the resilience required to reclaim a professional identity.
Ouaddou's experience in the Qatar Stars League serves as a stark case study of the kafala system's impact on migrant workers. After moving to Qatar SC in 2011, he reported being forced to train during the hottest parts of the day and eventually had his electricity cut off and his car confiscated. He likened the environment to 'slavery', explaining that his club held back an exit visa unless they provided a formal letter of permission. He only secured his release after taking his story to the BBC and CNN. This period of exploitation led to significant legal battles. A 2014 ruling by FIFA's dispute resolution chamber favoured Ouaddou over Qatar SC, forcing the organisation to settle six months of unpaid wages.
Following this victory, he became a vocal advocate for players joining FIFPRO, the trade union for professional footballers, to protect against similar abuses. In a dramatic shift of fortune, Ouaddou transitioned from a player to a highly successful manager. After coaching stints in the DRC and Benin, he joined the South African club Orlando Pirates in June 2025. In a remarkable inaugural season, he led the team to three local titles: the 2025 MTN 8, 2025 Carling Knockout Cup, and 2025–26 South African Premiership. His rapid ascent culminated in him being named the 2025–26 South African Premiership Coach of the Season.
