From a lost period drama to Bengali cinema's highest earners
In short: Abir Chatterjee’s screen journey began with a film that literally vanished from history. Today, he is one of the highest-paid stars in Bengali cinema, anchoring massive commercial hits and defining the modern era of the iconic detective Byomkesh Bakshi.
Chatterjee's cinematic roots are shrouded in mystery. His screen debut occurred in 2004 with 'Robibar Bikelbela', an independent period drama where he portrayed a disillusioned former Naxalite revolutionary in post-Emergency Bengal. However, no copies of this film have ever been found, rendering it a lost piece of regional cinema history. He spent several years building his profile through Bengali soap operas and telefilms—including titles like 'Proloy Asche Ruposhi Bangla' and 'Janmobhumi'—before making his official lead debut in the 2009 film 'Cross Connection'.
His career trajectory shifted significantly with his portrayal of the legendary detective Byomkesh Bakshi. He has appeared in numerous iterations of the character, spanning multiple series directed by different filmmakers such as Anjan Dutt and Arindam Sil. His work in these films, alongside roles like Feluda in 'Badshahi Angti', established him as a cornerstone of Bengali mystery cinema. This popularity was bolstered by his ability to balance high-concept detective work with massive commercial success, including the 2018 blockbuster 'Guptodhoner Sandhane' and the 2022 hit 'Karnasubarner Guptodhon'.
Beyond genre fiction, Chatterjee has earned critical accolades for diverse performances. He won Best Villain for 'Kanamachi' in 2014 and later secured Best Romantic Hero of the Year for 'Alaap' in 2024. His filmography includes a wide range of styles: from the National Award-winning 'Bishorjan' (2017) to satirical action comedies like 'Shri Swapankumarer Badami Hyenar Kobole'. He has also ventured into Bollywood with the 2010 success 'Kahaani' and entered the Hindi web series space in 2020 with 'Avrodh: The Siege Within 2'.
Chatterjee’s professional identity is deeply rooted in a lineage of performance. As the son of theatre personalities Phalguni and Rumki Chatterjee, his artistic sensibilities are heavily influenced by Soumitra Chatterjee. This pedigree, combined with an academic background including a B.Com from Goenka College and an MBA from ICFAI University, has allowed him to navigate the industry as both a critically respected actor and one of the highest-paid figures in Bengali cinema.
