From sketch comedy to a global Academy Award contender
In short: Abishan Jeevinth's journey into Indian cinema began with YouTube sketches and a shelved debut during a global pandemic. Today, he is recognized as a major new cinematic voice whose work on Tourist Family reached international acclaim, earning a spot in the race for an Oscar.
Born in Tiruchirappalli in 2000, Abishan Jeevinth transitioned from a student of Visual Communication at Loyola College to a multifaceted creator. His early career was defined by digital content on his YouTube channel, Thug Light, and short films like Djinn (2019). However, the trajectory of his professional life shifted significantly in 2020 when his first signed feature film project was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He also directed a second short film titled Nodigal Pirakatum in 2020. His academic background included a Bachelor of Science degree.
During this period of forced hiatus, Jeevinth pivoted to writing. His original plan involved drafting a follow-up to Thenali (2000) by Kamal Haasan, yet his writing transformed into Tourist Family. With Million Dollar Studios and MRP Entertainment as producers, the movie earned ₹90 crore (US$9.3 million) globally during 2025. Its success was not merely financial; it garnered praise from industry titans like S.S. Rajamouli for its focus on empathy and social harmony.
The film's cultural impact reached a peak in 2026 when it was selected as one of only four Indian submissions out of 201 for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Following this success, Jeevinth moved into lead acting roles with With Love (2026). His rapid ascent from a pandemic-era screenwriter to an Oscar-eligible filmmaker illustrates a modern shift in Indian cinema where digital roots and empathetic storytelling can scale to global prominence. The production of With Love involved a partnership between MRP Entertainment and Zion Films. It premiered at Sathyam Cinemas on February 3, 2026. The film also features actress Anaswara Rajan in the lead.
