In short: Adam Gemili’s career was defined by a rare duality: a professional footballer who pivoted to the track to become a historic sprinter. He remains the first British athlete of North African or Middle Eastern heritage to clock sub-10 seconds in the 100m and sub-20 seconds in the 200m.

Born in 1993, Gemili spent seven years in Chelsea’s youth academy before transitioning to elite athletics in 2012. His athletic rise was meteoric; that same year, he won gold at the World Junior Championships in Barcelona, setting a championship record of 10.05 seconds. By 2013, he had mastered the 200m, becoming only the second British man to dip under the 20-second mark with a 19.98-second run in Moscow. His versatility made him a cornerstone of the British 4x100m relay team, which secured a historic gold at the 2017 World Championships.

Gemili’s career was marked by agonizingly close margins. At the 2016 Rio Olympics, he missed a 200m bronze medal by a mere six-thousandths of a second. Similarly, at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, he finished fourth in the 200m after leading off the bend. Despite these near-misses, his consistency at the elite level—spanning from 2012 to 2023—solidified his status as a premier sprinter. He eventually broke the 10-second barrier legally in 2015, clocking 9.97 seconds at a Birmingham Diamond League meeting.

Beyond the track, Gemili was a vocal advocate for athlete rights. In 2019, he led a group of prominent British athletes, including Mo Farah and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, in challenging the British Olympic Association over restrictive marketing rules. This activism resulted in a 2020 agreement that granted athletes greater freedom to promote their personal sponsors. Following his retirement from elite athletics in 2026, Gemili returned to his roots, joining Chelsea as a sprint coach, effectively bridging his two professional lives.
