How a college freshman became the third player to win the Hobey Baker Award
In short: Adam Fantilli’s ascent through hockey ranks was nothing short of meteoric. From a standout freshman season at the University of Michigan to being drafted third overall by the Columbus Blue Jackets, his ability to dominate collegiate play and transition to the NHL has made him one of the most significant young talents in the sport.
Adam Fantilli’s collegiate career at the University of Michigan was defined by historic scoring efficiency. During his freshman season, he led the nation in both points and goals, averaging 1.81 points per game. This scoring rate was the third-highest in the country, trailing only Johnny Gaudreau at 2.00 and Kyle Connor at 1.87. His performance earned him the Hobey Baker Award, making him only the third freshman in history to receive the honor, joining Paul Kariya in 1993 and Jack Eichel in 2015.
His dominance extended to the postseason, where he set the Big Ten tournament record with seven goals and 11 points in a single tournament, earning the tournament MVP title. This success paved the way for his selection as the third overall pick in the 2023 NHL entry draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets. After signing a three-year entry-level contract on July 1, 2023, he made his NHL debut on his 19th birthday, October 12, 2023, against the Philadelphia Flyers.
Fantilli has also been a consistent presence for Canada on the international stage. He has secured gold medals at both the 2023 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships and the 2023 IIHF World Championship. By winning both in a single year, he became the second Canadian to achieve this feat, following Jonathan Toews, and the 11th player globally to do so. Despite a season-ending calf laceration during his rookie NHL season, his rapid rise remains a focal point for the Blue Jackets' future.
