From public housing to All-Australian: the resilient career of Adam Treloar
In short: Rising from the public housing of Dandenong, Adam Treloar transformed from a Rising Star nominee into a league-leading midfield powerhouse. His journey through three AFL clubs is a testament to endurance, marked by record-breaking disposal counts and the persistent challenge of injury.
Adam Treloar's ascent began in Dandenong, where he attended Dandenong North Primary School and Dandenong High School. His talent was evident early; after winning the MVP for Victoria Country in the 2009 AFL Under 18 Championships, he was recruited by the Greater Western Sydney Giants. His impact was immediate, earning an AFL Rising Star nomination in 2012 after a 39-disposal performance against Collingwood.
Treloar's career is defined by high-volume output. In 2019, while playing for Collingwood, he led the entire AFL in total disposals and handballs, tallying 454 handballs. That season, he averaged 32.9 disposals per game across 24 matches. His ability to dominate the midfield earned him comparisons to elite players like Mark Ricciuto, and he eventually secured an All-Australian selection in 2024 with the Western Bulldogs.
However, the path was not without friction. His departure from Collingwood in November 2020 was driven by club concerns regarding salary cap constraints and his mental wellbeing due to family distance. Later in his career, soft-tissue injuries, specifically calf muscle tears, limited him to just nine senior games in his final two seasons. After 263 games and 158 goals, Treloar announced his retirement on 9 September 2026.
Despite the physical setbacks, Treloar's legacy is one of statistical dominance and resilience. From his early days with the Dandenong Stingrays to his final years at the Bulldogs, he remained a constant presence in the AFL, proving his worth through sheer volume of work and a relentless desire for the game.
