The versatile midfielder who helped shape the future of women's football
In short: Adam Selwood was a cornerstone of the West Coast Eagles, evolving from a rising star into a premiership winner and a transformative leader. Beyond his 187 games of elite competition, his legacy includes pioneering the club's inaugural AFLW team through his work as Head of Female Football.
Recruited from Bendigo, Victoria, in the 2002 National Draft as the third pick for the West Coast Eagles, Selwood's career was marked by both physical resilience and tactical versatility. He transitioned between midfield and defensive roles, a skill set that earned him a nomination for the AFL Rising Star in 2005. His career included a 2006 premiership victory over Sydney, though he also experienced the heartbreak of a four-point Grand Final loss in 2005.
Selwood's longevity was tested by several significant health challenges. In 2004, his season was cut short by osteitis pubis. In 2005, a collision with Adelaide captain Mark Ricciuto resulted in a concussion and a diagnosis of compartment syndrome, though the subsequent rest proved beneficial. Later in his career, a serious arm infection in 2012 led to a temporary assignment with the East Perth Football Club in the WAFL.
After retiring from playing at the end of the 2013 season—a year in which he was named the club's best clubman—Selwood transitioned into coaching. He served as a development coach and played a pivotal role in establishing the West Coast Eagles' AFLW presence. Tragically, Selwood passed away on 17 May 2025 in Herdsman, Western Australia, at the age of 41, just three months after the death of his twin brother, Troy.
Off the field, Selwood was a dedicated ambassador, supporting organizations such as Seeing Eye Dogs Australia and the Meningitis Centre, the latter of which was a cause close to him following a childhood bout of HIB meningitis.
