From rising star to injury-plagued veteran: the resilient career of Jaeger O'Meara

Born in Perth on 23 February 1994, O'Meara's ascent was rapid. After playing junior football with the Dongara Eagles, he made a significant impact in the Great Northern Football League, winning the Guardian Medal at just 16 years old. His talent was so evident that he was selected as the first pick in the 2011 AFL mini-draft by the Gold Coast Suns, a special draft designed for players too young for the primary draft.
The rules of that mini-draft meant O'Meara had to sit out the 2012 season, though he competed in the NAB Cup preseason and with the reserve team. His breakthrough came in 2013, where he played every single game, recording 44 appearances across 2013 and 2014. This dominance earned him the AFL Rising Star award and the 2014 AFLCA best young player of the year title.
However, his career has been defined by significant physical setbacks. A knee injury in 2015 led to extensive surgery, causing him to miss the entire 2015 and 2016 seasons. After a trade to Hawthorn in 2017, he struggled through another injury-plagued season before establishing himself as a midfield mainstay in 2018 and 2019. In 2022, he returned to his home state of Western Australia, signing a four-year contract with Fremantle, where he has since expanded his versatility to include roles as a wingman and half-back.
