From dairy farming roots to becoming a premier AFL goal-kicker
In short: Born in the dairy country of Victoria, Josh Treacy has rapidly ascended to the heights of Australian rules football. After a breakout 2024, the Fremantle star has become a dominant force, securing leading goalkicker titles and establishing himself as one of the league's most clinical forwards.
Josh Treacy's journey from Cohuna, a dairy farming region in northern Victoria, to the elite level of the AFL is a testament to rapid development. After playing for the Cohuna Kangas and the Bendigo Pioneers—where he was named co-captain in 2020 despite a pandemic-related season cancellation—he was recruited by the Fremantle Football Club as their first selection in the 2021 rookie draft. He initially entered the professional ranks via the 2021 rookie draft. This followed his time competing in the NAB League Boys Under 18s competition.
His early career was marked by both promise and physical setbacks. Following his debut in 2021, he faced a difficult 2022 season, limited to just four appearances due to a combination of a groin injury, ankle issues, and glandular fever. However, his resilience led to a massive breakout in 2024, where he finished as Fremantle's leading goalkicker with 45 goals across 20 games, earning an eighth-place finish in the Coleman Medal standings. His return to action occurred during the first round of the 2023 season. This followed a period of significant physical struggle.
Treacy has since cemented his status as a cornerstone of the Fremantle forward line. In 2025, he secured his second consecutive leading goalkicker title with 44 goals. By the 2026 season, he reached new heights, becoming the second Docker since Matthew Pavlich in 2012 to kick 50 goals in a single season, eventually finishing with 54 goals from 23 games and earning his first All-Australian selection. His leadership qualities were formally recognised when he joined the club's leadership group for the 2025 season. He also led the entire competition in contested marks during 2026.
