When cinematic divinity meets biological warfare on the big screen
In short: In 2025, a Telugu fantasy drama attempted to blend high-stakes bioweapon threats with ancient spiritual rituals. The film follows an avatar of Lord Shiva as he navigates a landscape where modern science and mystical sadhana collide in a battle for national survival.
Akhanda 2: Thaandavam released on 12 December 2025, serves as the sequel to the 2021 film Akhanda. The narrative picks up after NIA officer Perumal refuses orders to apprehend the protagonist, Akhanda (played by Nandamuri Balakrishna), choosing instead to resign from his post.
The plot shifts into a high-concept fantasy where the Chinese Army, having lost a war in Tibet, launches a bioweapon attack targeting the Maha Kumbh Mela. This move aims to destroy Indian spirituality, creating a crisis that forces scientists like Dr. Janani to race against time to develop an antidote while being hunted by a greedy minister named Ajit Thakur.
The film leans heavily into mythological tropes, featuring Akhanda performing 'Ashta Siddhi' Sadhana in the same location where Arjuna sought the Pashupatastra during the Dwapar Yuga. The protagonist must confront both human antagonists and mystical rivals, such as a wizard mastered in black magic named Netra.
Despite its ambitious scope—spanning locations from the Himalayas to Georgia—the film received mixed to negative reviews. Critics noted that while it delivered on 'loudness' and 'divinity,' it struggled with emotional connection and cohesive writing. It ultimately became a box-office bomb, grossing approximately ₹76.5 crore in its first weekend. The production was marked by significant delays, including a stay order from the Madras High Court due to a financial dispute between Eros International and 14 Reels Plus Entertainment. The film eventually premiered on Netflix in January 2026 across multiple languages.
