The lethal assassin hiding behind a lazy teacher's mask
In short: He appears incompetent, lazy, and perpetually bored. But behind Glenn Radars' disinterest lies a dark history as a former Imperial Court Mage Corps assassin. Discover how a man known as 'The Fool' uses a unique magic to negate the very spells he was trained to cast.
In the light novel series *Akashic Records of Bastläufig Magic Instructor* by Tarō Hitsuji, Glenn Radars presents himself as an unfit substitute teacher at the Alzano Imperial Magic Academy. To his student Sistine Fibel, he seems like a negligent instructor who lacks any real skill. However, this persona masks a heavy past. Glenn was once a high-ranking operative in the Imperial Court Mage Corps, known by the infamous moniker 'The Fool.'
His retreat from active duty was driven by profound trauma and depression, following the death of his partner, Sara Silvers. Sara, known as 'The Empress,' was killed during an encounter involving Angel Dust addicts.
This loss, compounded by the failure of his superior to send reinforcements, left Glenn disillusioned with the traditional, rote-memorization approach to magic favored by the academy's professors. Despite his apparent lack of combat magic, Glenn possesses a specialized, highly effective ability called 'The Fool's World.' This technique allows him to negate the activation of all magic within a specific radius. While it cannot nullify spells that have already been cast, it renders incoming magic useless, allowing him to rely on superior hand-to-hand combat skills to defeat opponents. This unique mastery of magical concepts makes him a formidable, if unconventional, instructor.
The narrative also weaves complex connections between the characters. For instance, the student Rumia Tingel is actually Princess Ermiana, a 'cursed' princess who survived an attack three years prior. Her connection to Glenn is deep, as she remembers him as the assassin who saved her life. Through these overlapping histories of assassination, loss, and hidden identities, the series explores themes of family, adoption, and the search for meaning in the wake of tragedy.
