From amateur roots to European stages: the rise of Alanyaspor
In short: Founded in 1948 as a small amateur side, Alanyaspor has transformed from a local club into a Süper Lig mainstay. After decades of climbing the Turkish football pyramid, they reached the pinnacle of domestic success and even secured a historic debut on the continental stage.
In 1948, Dr. Ali Nazım Köseoğlu joined local youngsters to create Alanya Kalespor. This group formed the team, originally naming it Alanya Kalespor. Originally wearing blue and white, the club operated at an amateur level for decades, eventually joining the Antalya Amateur League in the 1965–66 season under red and white colors. A pivotal shift occurred in May 1982, when chairman Hüseyin Arıkan oversaw a statute change that adopted the club's iconic orange and green identity and the name Alanyaspor.
The climb through the professional tiers was marked by periods of both triumph and instability. After being admitted to the TFF 3. Lig in the 1984–85 season, the club saw its first promotion to the TFF 2. Lig in 1987–88. Following a leadership crisis in 2011, the election of Hasan Çavuşoğlu helped oversee a modern era of growth. This momentum culminated in a 2015–16 campaign where, playing as Multigroup Alanyaspor, the team defeated Adana Demirspor on penalties to earn their first-ever promotion to the Süper Lig.
Since entering the top flight in 2016, Alanyaspor has established itself as a competitive force. The 2019–20 season remains a high-water mark, where a fifth-place finish secured their first European qualification. Although their 2020–21 UEFA Europa League debut ended in a 1–0 loss to Rosenborg, the club has since maintained a consistent presence in the upper reaches of the league. Today, they play at the Alanya Oba Stadium, a venue that has seen various naming-rights sponsors, including Corendon, as the club continues its professional evolution.
