In short: In 2015, a teenager stepped onto the pitch in Ligue 1 and instantly rewrote the history books. Beyond the record-breaking debut, his journey spans from the football academies of France to the national team of Ivory Coast, marked by immense promise and high-stakes transfers.

Alban-Marc Lafont’s ascent to professional football was meteoric. After developing in the AS Lattoise academy—where he originally played as an attacking midfielder before switching to goalkeeper—he signed with Toulouse in 2014. On 28 November 2015, at just 16 years and 310 days old, he made his Ligue 1 debut against OGC Nice. This performance made him the youngest goalkeeper ever to play in the French top flight, surpassing the previous record held by Mickaël Landreau.

His early career was defined by rapid recognition. By January 2016, La Gazzetta dello Sport named him one of the top 34 U-20 players in the world, alongside Gianluigi Donnarumma. This momentum continued through 2018, when the CIES Football Observatory ranked him as the second-most promising player under 20 globally, trailing only Donnarumma and ahead of Kylian Mbappé. However, his time in Italy with Fiorentina, which began with a €7 million transfer in July 2018, was a period of mixed results, where impressive saves were occasionally offset by high-profile errors.

Lafont's identity is also shaped by a complex international and personal history. Born in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, to a French father and a Burkinabé mother, he moved to France as a child. While he represented France at various youth levels, he eventually transitioned his sports citizenship to the Ivory Coast in September 2025. Today, he continues his professional journey in the Turkish Süper Lig with Amedspor, a club he joined in July 2026 to seek a new role as an undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
