The 15-year-old who secured a historic Champions League victory
In short: Imagine entering the professional football world as a teenager and immediately making history. George Ilenikhena didn't just join a club; he became a catalyst for their first-ever win in Europe's elite competition, scoring a goal in stoppage time against one of the world's biggest giants.
Born in Lagos but raised in Antony, France, George Ilenikhena’s trajectory is a study in rapid athletic ascent. After developing through the amateur ranks of Antony Football Evolution, he joined Amiens SC during the 2021–22 season. His explosive potential was evident early; by age 15, his prolific scoring for the French under-17 national side—totaling 24 goals that year—caught the attention of scouts across the globe.
Ilenikhena made his professional debut on November 19, 2022, in a Coupe de France match where he entered as a substitute during an already lopsided 10–0 victory. However, his true arrival on the world stage occurred in December 2023 with Royal Antwerp. In the 92nd minute of stoppage time, he scored against Barcelona to secure a 3–2 win, marking the first time the Belgian club had ever won in the Champions League.
His market value has skyrocketed alongside his pedigree. After moving to AS Monaco in July 2024, where he repeated his feat by scoring against Barcelona again in September 2024, he commanded a reported €33 million move to Al-Ittihad in February 2026. This transition also marked a significant shift in identity: after initially representing France at the youth level starting in 2021, Ilenikhena switched allegiance to Nigeria, making his scoring debut for the Super Eagles in September 2026.
Technically, coaches like Philippe Hinschberger highlight him as a powerful left-footed center-forward. He is noted specifically for his ability to attack the depth of the field with speed, a physical profile that has allowed him to transition from a local amateur prospect to a high-value international asset in less than a decade.
