How a teenage prodigy rose from French third-tier football to the Premier League
In short: Maxwel Cornet's journey began in the lower tiers of French football. After debuting for Metz at just 15 years old, he navigated the complexities of professional development, eventually moving between elite clubs in France and England to establish himself as a versatile force on the pitch.
Born in Ivory Coast and moving to northern France at age three, Cornet's professional trajectory was marked by early responsibility. He made his debut in the Championnat National, the French third tier, on 31 August 2012, appearing as a substitute for Metz at just 15 years and 11 months old. By 2013, he was already making appearances in Ligue 2.
His talent earned him a move to the Ligue 1 giants Lyon in January 2015. While he initially entered the squad as a substitute for Alexandre Lacazette, he eventually became a key figure under coach Rudi Garcia. In January 2020, following injuries to Youssouf Koné and Fernando Marçal, Cornet was tested at left-back, a role he mastered to become a regular starter for the remainder of that season.
Cornet's career has been defined by high-stakes moments, such as scoring against Manchester City during Lyon's 2019–20 UEFA Champions League quarter-final run. After a €15 million transfer to Burnley in August 2021, he proved his clinical nature by finishing that season as his club's leading scorer with nine goals in 26 matches. Today, he continues his career across Europe, moving between clubs like West Ham United, Southampton, and Genoa.
Beyond the pitch, Cornet's identity is deeply tied to his roots; he grew up idolizing Didier Drogba. While he represented France at every youth level, he ultimately chose to play for the Ivory Coast national team, making his senior debut in June 2017.
