Alec Burleson: From Undrafted High Schooler to Major League Baseball's RBI Leader
In short: Born in 1998, Alec Burleson evolved from a versatile college two-way player into a cornerstone of the St. Louis Cardinals. After being overlooked in the 2017 draft, his steady climb through the minor leagues culminated in a breakout 2026 season where he led all of Major League Baseball in RBIs.
Alec Burleson's path to professional success was defined by his early versatility. During his time at East Carolina University, he excelled as both a hitter and a pitcher, earning recognition as the American Athletic Conference Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 2018. His collegiate career, which saw him play first base, various outfield positions, and designated hitter, ended prematurely in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite this, the St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the second round of the 2020 MLB draft, signing him for $700,000.
After a rapid ascent through the minor league system in 2021, Burleson made his major league debut in September 2022. His transition to the majors was marked by steady growth. By 2025, his utility role earned him his first Silver Slugger Award, a testament to his offensive impact across multiple defensive positions. He continued to balance duties in the outfield, at first base, and as a designated hitter, solidifying his place in the Cardinals' lineup.
The 2026 season marked a significant milestone in Burleson's career. Transitioning into an everyday first baseman, he achieved career highs in home runs, doubles, and hits. Most notably, his 116 RBIs led all of Major League Baseball, making him the first Cardinals player to achieve this feat since Joe Torre in 1971. This performance underscored his development from a promising collegiate talent into one of the league's most productive offensive players.
