How one Indonesian athlete broke a twenty-year drought in professional tennis
In short: Since 2003, Indonesian players struggled to secure WTA titles. Then came Aldila Sutjiadi. From a collegiate tennis star at the University of Kentucky to a world No. 19 doubles specialist, her rise has redefined what Indonesian athletes can achieve on the global stage.
Aldila Sutjiadi’s ascent is marked by significant milestones for Indonesian tennis. After Angelique Widjaja won a doubles title in 2003, Indonesian players faced a long drought in WTA titles. Sutjiadi finally broke this streak in April 2022 at the Copa Colsanitas, where she and Astra Sharma secured the victory, subsequently entering the doubles top 100 at world No. 86.
Her career is defined by versatility and high-level consistency. In doubles, she has secured nine WTA Tour titles and five at the WTA 125 level. Her success extends to mixed doubles, where she has reached three Grand Slam semifinals: the 2023 French Open, the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, and the 2024 US Open. These performances represent Indonesia's best results in senior Grand Slam events, following in the footsteps of Yayuk Basuki, who reached the 1993 US Open women's doubles semifinals.
Sutjiadi's journey also includes a notable collegiate chapter. She played four seasons for the Kentucky Wildcats at the University of Kentucky, graduating in May 2017 with a degree in mathematical economics. During her time there, she helped the program secure its first national championship in 2016. Beyond the court, her career has faced hurdles, such as a sudden hearing loss in late 2024 that forced her to withdraw from the Australian Open.
Sutjiadi hit a peak doubles ranking of world No. 19 by 2026. 19. Her regional supremacy is clear; since May 2021, she has led active Indonesian women in doubles, while repeatedly winning SEA Games and 2018 Asian Games gold for her country.
