The defensive specialist who outshone superstars on the Olympic stage
In short: In a sport often dominated by offensive highlights, Aleksa Avramović carved out a distinct legacy as a versatile playmaker and elite defender. His journey from Serbian youth systems to international bronze medals showcases how consistency and defensive grit can elevate an athlete beyond mere scoring statistics.
Born in 1994, Avramović developed his craft in the youth system of Mladost Čačak before moving to Borac Čačak in 2013. His early career was marked by a prolific scoring outburst during the 2015–16 season, where he led the league in scoring and earned MVP honors for the first half. A standout moment occurred in February against Mladost Zemun, where he exploded for 47 points, earning an impressive index rating of 63. He spent a single season playing for OKK Beograd after his first senior experience. His return to Borac Čačak in the summer of 2015 proved pivotal for his development.
His professional trajectory took him across Europe, spanning Italy with Pallacanestro Varese, Spain with Unicaja and Estudiantes, and back to Serbia with Partizan. During his tenure at Partizan, Avramović became a key figure in high-stakes rivalries, notably scoring 33 points in the 'Eternal derby' against Crvena zvezda in March 2022. He also reached the pinnacle of European club basketball by competing in the EuroLeague and helping his team secure an ABA League championship. His move to Unicaja in June 2019 involved a reported deal worth 530,000 euros. He later joined CSKA Moscow in July 2024 and helped them win the VTB League championship.
Avramović’s international career highlights his evolution into a premier defensive force. Representing Serbia, he secured a silver medal at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup under Svetislav Pešić. However, his most significant accolade came at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Despite not being the highest scorer, he was named the tournament's Best Defensive Player—a prestigious feat that saw him ranked ahead of NBA stars Rudy Gobert and Victor Wembanyama in the voting. During the 2023 World Cup, he averaged 11.3 points over seven games for the national team. His Olympic performance included an average of 10.5 points across six tournament matches.
