From Villarreal's youth setup to the heights of the Bundesliga and Spain
In short: Aleix García's footballing odyssey is a masterclass in persistence. After a high-profile move to Manchester City and various loans across Europe, the Spanish midfielder has finally ascended to the top tier of European football, proving that the path to stardom is rarely a straight line.
Born on 28 June 1997 in Ulldecona, Catalonia, Aleix García's journey began in the youth ranks of Villarreal, whom he joined in 2005 at the age of eight. His professional ascent was rapid; by 16 years old, he was making his senior debut for Villarreal's reserves in the Segunda División B on 26 April 2014. Just over a year later, he reached the top flight of Spanish football, making his La Liga debut on 23 May 2015 during a 4–0 defeat against Athletic Bilbao.
The midfielder's career later took him to the English Premier League when he joined Manchester City on 27 August 2015. While his time in England included appearances in the FA Cup and EFL Cup, his path required significant seasoning through various loan spells. He played for Girona FC in Spain and Royal Excel Mouscron in Belgium, and even spent time in Romania with Dinamo București, joining them on 8 October 2020.
A pivotal resurgence occurred during his second stint with Girona FC, where he helped the club achieve promotion to La Liga through the play-offs. This success paved the way for a major move on 13 June 2024, when he signed with Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen for a fee exceeding €18 million. His individual form also caught the eye of the Spanish national team, leading to a senior debut against Cyprus on 16 November 2023, though he was ultimately left out of the final squad for UEFA Euro 2024.
García's career serves as a testament to the non-linear nature of professional sports, moving from the youth academy to the elite levels of the Bundesliga and the Spanish national team through grit and tactical evolution.
