From Basque youth ranks to a Barcelona domestic treble
In short: Iñigo Martínez has navigated a complex career across Spain's top clubs. After a high-profile €32 million move to Athletic Bilbao, the centre-back joined Barcelona in 2023, where he secured a domestic treble during the 2024–25 season, proving his resilience despite early injury setbacks.
Born in Ondarroa, Biscay, Martínez began his journey in the youth ranks of local club Aurrerá Ondarroa before joining Real Sociedad. He made his professional debut during the 2009–10 season, initially playing as a left-back. His early years were marked by significant contributions, including helping the reserves earn promotion from the Tercera División.
A major turning point occurred in January 2018 when Martínez signed with Athletic Bilbao for €32 million. This fee, which served as his contractual buyout clause, set a record for the buying club. During his tenure at San Mamés, he appeared in 177 games and scored eight goals, though his final year was hampered by various injuries.
Martínez's move to Barcelona in 2023 was initially complicated by a foot injury requiring surgery, which delayed his registration and left him as the fifth-choice option behind players like Ronald Araújo and Jules Koundé. However, under head coach Hansi Flick in the 2024–25 season, he became a regular starter. This resurgence led to a domestic treble, including winning the league, Copa del Rey, and Supercopa de España.
His international career with Spain has seen both highs and controversies. While he earned his first cap in 2013, he has occasionally withdrawn from squads due to fitness or personal considerations. His versatility is noted by his ability to play as a centre-back or a left-back, utilizing his aerial prowess and leadership to influence matches.
