The versatile Italian footballer who conquered Europe and Serie A
In short: From a Roma academy graduate to a European champion, Alessandro Florenzi's career was defined by extreme tactical flexibility. Whether playing as a midfielder, winger, or full-back, he became a vital asset for Italy and major clubs across Europe, overcoming significant knee injuries to secure top-tier silverware.
Born on 11 March 1991, Florenzi emerged from the Roma youth academy to make his Serie A debut on 22 May 2011, subbing in for the legendary Francesco Totti. His early career was marked by a developmental loan at Crotone, where he scored on 27 August 2011. By the 2013–14 season, he was a fixture in a Roma side that secured a second-place finish and returned the club to Champions League competition.
Florenzi gained international recognition for his technical skill and ability to strike the ball from distance, notably scoring a 50-yard goal against Barcelona in the Champions League in September 2015. This performance earned him a nomination for the 2015 FIFA Puskás Award. On the international stage, he was a key member of Italy's squad that won UEFA Euro 2020, entering the match as a substitute for Emerson Palmieri in the final against England.
His career also saw success in France and Italy's top flight. While on loan at Paris Saint-Germain during the 2020–21 season, he secured both the Coupe de France and the Trophée des Champions. Later, at AC Milan, he contributed to the club's 19th Scudetto during the 2021–22 season. Despite facing recurring knee injuries—including an ACL tear in 2016 and a meniscus tear in 2020—he remained a highly regarded, energetic player until his retirement in 2025 at age 34.
