The youngest brother of a dynasty finally joins the family business
In short: Alex Antetokounmpo spent years navigating the periphery of basketball stardom. While his brothers became NBA champions and household names, Alex took a circuitous path through Europe and minor leagues before finally making history as the third brother to suit up for the same NBA franchise.
Alex Antetokounmpo's journey to the NBA was defined by a non-linear path. Born in Athens to Nigerian parents, he moved to Wisconsin as a child and attended Dominican High School. Despite being a two-time all-state selection who averaged 20 points and seven rebounds as a senior, he was only considered a three-star recruit. Rather than taking a college scholarship, he chose to go pro in Europe in 2020, signing with UCAM Murcia in Spain.
His professional odyssey included stints in Spain, the NBA Summer League, the G League, and leagues in Lithuania and Montenegro. He faced a series of short-term contracts and waivers, including a brief one-day stint with the Toronto Raptors in 2021. By signing a two-way deal with the Milwaukee Bucks in October 2025, he achieved a landmark feat: Giannis, Thanasis, and Alex became the first trio of brothers to share a roster in the club's timeline.
The family's basketball pedigree is immense. Giannis, the most famous of the siblings, was the NBA MVP in both 2019 and 2020 and won a championship in 2021. Thanasis shared that 2021 title with Giannis, while Kostas won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Alex's debut for the Bucks came on March 31, 2026, against the Dallas Mavericks, marking the culmination of a long journey from the streets of Athens to the pinnacle of American sports.
The family's reach includes equity; Alex plus three of his siblings were named members of the Nashville SC ownership collective within the MLS. This transition from immigrant athletes to sports owners highlights the broader narrative of the Antetokounmpo family's rapid ascent in global sports culture.
