In short: Alex Anzalone’s path to professional football was anything but linear. From missing nearly half his college games due to physical setbacks to navigating a career marked by recurring shoulder issues, his journey highlights the grueling endurance required to reach the pinnacle of American sports.

Anzalone's collegiate career at the University of Florida from 2013 to 2016 was characterized by significant physical hurdles. Despite originally committing to high-profile programs like Ohio State and Notre Dame, he spent four years in Gainesville where injuries sidelined him for 20 games. His only full season of play occurred in 2014 as a backup, leading him to forgo his final year of eligibility to enter the 2017 NFL draft.

Selected by the New Orleans Saints in the third round (76th overall), Anzalone quickly transitioned into a starting role. However, his rookie campaign was cut short by a shoulder injury in Week 4 of 2017. He spent several years navigating the league with various teams, including a stint with the Detroit Lions beginning in March 2021. During this period, he consistently battled to maintain his status as a starter while managing the physical toll of the position.

His tenure with the Lions saw a notable statistical climb. In 2022, he started every game of the season, recording 125 total tackles. This consistency led to a significant three-year contract extension worth $18.75 million in March 2023. By his third year with Detroit, his performance earned him a selection as a 2024 NFL Pro Bowl alternate, marking a high point in his professional recognition.

The narrative of perseverance continued into the 2024 season when a broken left forearm forced him onto injured reserve in November. Despite the setback, he was cleared to return for the final game of the regular season on January 4, 2025. His career came full circle in March 2026, when he signed a two-year, $17 million deal to return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
