The driver who started every single GP2 race in history
In short: Before the records were broken, Alexandre Sarnes Negrão held a unique distinction in motorsport. His tenacity on the circuit secured a historical milestone, making him the sole competitor to participate in every GP2 event held up to that point, regardless of his inconsistent performance.
Alexandre Sarnes Negrão, known as Xandinho, began his journey in karting in 1998. His path to professional racing was paved by his association with Nelson Piquet Jr. Negrão joined the Piquet Sports team in 2003 to compete in the Formula Three Sudamericana series. This team was originally constructed to support Piquet's own aspirations for Formula One, but Negrão proved his own worth by securing the championship in 2004. During that same year, he also gained experience in the British Formula Three series with Carlin Motorsport.
Negrão's transition to the GP2 Series in 2005 marked a significant chapter in his career. He competed in the inaugural season alongside Piquet in a family-sponsored team, scoring four points. While his point total improved to thirteen in 2006, his performance in 2007 was notably disappointing. Despite expectations to lead the team after Piquet moved to Renault as a test driver, Negrão was outscored by his rookie teammate, Roldán Rodríguez, and was not retained for the 2008 season.
Despite the lack of silverware at the GP2 level, Negrão's endurance was historic. When he left the series, he remained the unique pilot to join each GP2 race ever run, possessing the highest start count until Giorgio Pantano broke that mark. Following his GP2 career, he diversified into sports car racing, competing in the FIA GT Championship for Vitaphone Racing Team and participating in the 2008 Le Mans 24 Hours.
