From youth coach to Bundesliga manager: the rapid rise of Alexander Blessin
In short: Alexander Blessin’s career is a whirlwind of rapid transitions and high-stakes appointments. After retiring from professional football in 2012, he moved from youth coaching at RB Leipzig to managing in Italy's Serie A and back to the Bundesliga, proving his ability to navigate the intense pressures of elite European football.
Alexander Blessin's journey from player to elite manager is marked by significant shifts in fortune and geography. Born on 28 May 1973, the German professional began his senior playing career with TSV Georgii Allianz Stuttgart. His time as a player included a brief stint in the Turkish Süper Lig with Antalyaspor in 2001, where he made a single league appearance, before he played for various German clubs until his retirement in 2012. He competed for several different German sides before hanging up his boots. His professional playing days concluded in 2012.
His transition into management began in 2012 as a youth coach for RB Leipzig. By 2020, he had ascended to the Belgian First Division A with KV Oostende. His immediate success there—securing a fifth-place finish and being named manager of the year—caught the attention of major clubs like Celtic and Sheffield United. This momentum led to a move to Italy's Serie A with Genoa in January 2022, following a buyout clause activation. His impressive performance in Belgium eventually attracted interest from several prominent clubs. This success facilitated his high-profile move to the Italian top flight.
However, the volatility of top-flight football was evident during his tenure in Italy. After failing to prevent Genoa's relegation, he was tasked with leading the Rossoblu back to Serie A for the 2022–23 season, but was dismissed in December 2022 following poor results. After a successful stint with Union SG, where he secured a Belgian Cup title in May 2024, Blessin returned to the Bundesliga with Borussia Mönchengladbach in September 2026. He achieved a historic victory by winning the Belgian Cup for Union SG. This triumph ended a long wait for the club's trophy success.
