The Allies of World War I were a complex, shifting coalition of global powers.
In short: The Entente was not a monolithic bloc but a fluid network of nations with competing interests. While Britain, France, and Russia formed the core, the coalition expanded to include Japan, Italy, and eventually the United States, each driven by distinct strategic goals, colonial ambitions, and urgent national security concerns.
The coalition originated from the Triple Entente, established in 1907 to balance the power of the German-led Triple Alliance. Britain, long committed to 'splendid isolation,' shifted its policy as German naval expansion threatened its interests. By 1914, secret military agreements ensured British support for France, though these commitments remained largely hidden from the public and even many government officials until the German invasion of neutral Belgium forced a declaration of war on 4 August 1914.
Global participation was vast, with the British Empire leveraging its Dominions and the British Raj to provide manpower. Over one million soldiers from the Indian Army served in theatres like France and the Middle East. Meanwhile, Japan joined the Entente in 1914 to secure German territories in the Pacific, such as the Mariana and Marshall Islands, and to assert dominance in China. However, Japan's aggressive Twenty-One Demands in 1915 created friction with its own allies, including the United States.
Italy’s entry in 1915 highlights the opportunistic nature of these alliances. Despite being part of the Triple Alliance, Italy remained neutral initially, citing the defensive nature of the pact. Under the 1915 Treaty of London, it joined the Entente to gain Austrian-held territories. The United States entered in 1917 as an 'associated power' to avoid formal entanglements, motivated by Germany's unrestricted submarine warfare and the Zimmermann telegram. By the 1919 Paris Peace Conference, the 'Big Four'—France, Britain, Italy, and the US—dominated the negotiations, yet the coalition's internal tensions persisted long after the war ended.
