Amani Toomer hid a respiratory condition for years while becoming a New York Giants legend
In short: Before Amani Toomer became the New York Giants' all-time leader in receiving yards, receptions, and touchdowns, he struggled with an undiagnosed physical hurdle. For years, the star receiver battled exercise-induced asthma in silence. Once he finally sought treatment, his performance on the field transformed, fueling a historic career in professional football.
Born in Berkeley, California, in 1974, Amani Askari Toomer was named for the Swahili words for peace and soldier. His path to the NFL began at the University of Michigan, where he played from 1992 to 1995. Despite a slow start as a backup, Toomer broke the school's single-season receiving record in 1994 with 1,096 yards. By the time he left Ann Arbor, he had amassed 2,657 receiving yards, ranking him fourth in Michigan history.
Drafted by the New York Giants in 1996, Toomer initially made his mark as a return specialist. However, his transition to a primary wide receiver was hampered by undiagnosed exercise-induced asthma. After addressing the condition, his production surged. Between 1999 and 2003, he recorded five consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 receiving yards. His 2002 campaign remains a standout, as he set single-season franchise records with 82 receptions and 1,343 yards.
Toomer’s career was defined by clutch performances, most notably during the 2007 season. He played a pivotal role in the Giants' run to Super Bowl XLII, catching a 52-yard touchdown in the divisional playoffs and leading the team with 84 receiving yards in the championship victory. By the time he retired, he held 16 franchise records, including 668 career receptions and 54 receiving touchdowns. In 2010, he was inducted into the New York Giants Ring of Honor, cementing his legacy as one of the team's most reliable targets.
