From Salzburg's youth ranks to the Premier League's elite stage
In short: Born in Austria but representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Amar Dedić has rapidly ascended through the ranks of European football. From his professional debut at age 16 to a high-profile move to Newcastle United, his career trajectory highlights the intense development pathways within modern professional football.
Amar Dedić's professional journey began in the youth systems of Sturm Graz and Red Bull Salzburg. After joining Salzburg's academy in 2015, he signed his first professional contract in August 2019. He made his professional debut for the feeder club, Liefering, on 26 July against Amstetten, appearing at just 16 years old. By June 2020, he had recorded his first professional goal during a victory over Dornbirn.
His rise through the Austrian leagues provided the foundation for a significant international career. Dedić earned his first senior international cap for Bosnia and Herzegovina on 29 March 2022, during a friendly against Luxembourg. He has since become a mainstay for the national team, earning over 30 caps and scoring his first senior international goal on 23 March 2023 against Iceland in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier. This international success culminated in his selection for the 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
Dedić's career has been defined by strategic moves across Europe's top leagues. Following successful stints and loans at Wolfsberger AC and Marseille, he joined Portuguese giants Benfica in June 2025, where he secured his first trophy in the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira. In August 2026, he completed a high-profile transfer to the English Premier League club Newcastle United for a reported fee of £29.5m. This move reunited him with his former coach, Matthias Jaissle, who previously managed him at both FC Liefering and Red Bull Salzburg.
Beyond the pitch, Dedić is a practising Muslim. During a national team concentration in Sarajevo, he visited a mosque alongside teammates Ermedin Demirović, Tarik Muharemović, and Dženis Burnić.
