From Slovenian youth prodigy to the Championship's most lethal marksman
In short: Žan Vipotnik’s rise is a masterclass in navigating the volatile path of professional football. From scoring 58 goals as an under-15 academy player to surviving a club's financial collapse, his journey highlights the grit required to transform from a local talent into a dominant league scorer.
Vipotnik’s trajectory began in the Slovenian giants Maribor academy. His early dominance was statistically staggering: he scored 58 goals for the under-15 team during the 2016–17 season, followed by 53 goals in 50 games for the under-17s and 31 goals in 25 games for the under-19s. These numbers established him as a premier youth prospect, leading to a senior debut on July 8, 2021, against Urartu in the UEFA Europa Conference League.
His professional path was marked by both rapid success and systemic instability. After a breakthrough 2022–23 season where he won the Slovenian PrvaLiga Player of the Year and top scorer titles with 20 goals, he moved to Bordeaux for approximately €3 million. However, off-field issues forced the club into administration at the end of the 2023–24 season, resulting in the loss of their professional status and Vipotnik's release as a free agent.
Vipotnik found stability at Swansea City, signing a four-year deal on August 1, 2024. His evolution was immediate; after scoring his first goal on August 17, he became the league's outright top scorer by January 20, following a brace against Blackburn Rovers. By the end of the season, he had netted 23 league goals, earning a place in the Championship Team of the Season and PFA Team of the Year for 2025–26.
On the international stage, Vipotnik made history on March 23, 2023. Entering as a substitute against Kazakhstan, he scored the winning goal just eight minutes later. At 21 years and 5 days old, he became only the second youngest player to score for Slovenia, trailing only Benjamin Šeško.
