In short: Founded in 1836 New York, the Ancient Order of Hibernians began as a shield for Catholic immigrants facing intense discrimination. From guarding cathedrals against mobs to influencing the Irish Parliamentary Party, this fraternal organization evolved from a defensive society into a powerful political and social force.

The Order's origins lie in 18th and 19th-century Catholic agrarian movements known as the Defenders and the Ribbonmen. While it found a permanent home in the United States, its later resurgence in Ulster at the end of the 19th century was defined by its opposition to the Orange Order. This rivalry was so visually striking that critics, including Jim Larkin, mockingly referred to the group as the 'Ancient Order of Catholic Orangemen' due to their use of sashes and banners.

In America, the AOH served as a vital support network for Irish immigrants navigating harsh conditions, particularly in the coal mining regions of Pennsylvania. The organization's history is marked by complex internal dynamics; for instance, some Pennsylvania lodges were infiltrated by the Molly Maguires during the late 1860s, though the AOH officially condemned the group's criminal activities in 1876. The Order also experienced a significant structural split in 1884, which saw the emergence of the 'American' branch, before the two factions reunited in 1898.

The Order's influence extended far beyond social aid, acting as a vehicle for Irish nationalism and a patron for political activity. By 1909, membership in Ulster had surged from 5,000 in 1900 to 64,000. While some members later joined the IRA following the 1916 Easter Rising, the AOH remained a significant presence in Irish politics, even approving the proposed partition of Ireland at a 1916 convention in Dublin. Today, while its scale has decreased, the Order remains a visible part of the Catholic community in Northern Ireland.
