From overlooked high school prospect to a multi-million dollar NFL defensive force
In short: Andrew Van Ginkel did not enter the football world as a blue-chip recruit. After playing for a consolidated high school team in Iowa, he navigated a complex collegiate path through three different institutions before proving his elite value in the NFL.
Van Ginkel's journey to the professional ranks was defined by persistence rather than immediate stardom. After attending Rock Valley Community High School in Iowa, where he played quarterback and defensive back for the Nighthawks, he entered the collegiate level without the benefit of major recruiting camps. This lack of early visibility meant he did not attract significant attention from large universities, forcing him to build his reputation through a series of transfers.
While playing defensive end during his freshman year at the University of South Dakota, he achieved first-team all Missouri Valley Football Conference status. Following the retirement of head coach Joe Glenn, Van Ginkel transferred to Iowa Western Community College. He eventually moved to the University of Wisconsin, where he transitioned to playing outside linebacker for two seasons before entering the professional stage.
The Miami Dolphins picked him in the 2019 NFL draft during the fifth round (151st overall), and he immediately showed his value. He recorded a 78-yard fumble return touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams on November 1, 2020, which stands as the second longest fumble return in Dolphins franchise history. His defensive versatility and impact continued with the Minnesota Vikings, where he signed a two-year, $20 million contract in March 2024. His performance in the NFL has been notable; in his first game for the Vikings on September 8, he recorded both a sack and an interception, a feat achieved by only two other Vikings players since 2000.
By 2025, Van Ginkel's value to the Vikings was solidified through a one-year, $23 million contract extension signed on April 29. His career has been marked by high-impact plays, including multiple pick-sixes and a recognition as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week following a dominant performance against the Seattle Seahawks.
