From Lagos to the Super Bowl: The trajectory of Moro Ojomo
In short: Moro Ojomo’s path to the NFL wasn't a straight line. Starting school in Nigeria at age three, he arrived in the United States as a late bloomer who didn't even know how to work out as a high school sophomore. His journey highlights the grit required to master a physical craft.
Ojomo was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on August 15, 2001. His early education began in his home country at age three, a head start that later placed him two years younger than most of his peers when he entered high school in the United States in 2009. After moving to California and then Houston, Texas, he attended Katy High School, where his athletic development was initially slow. During his first two years, he avoided varsity football, confessing that his physical conditioning techniques were still undeveloped.
The turning point came after his sophomore year when Ojomo committed to serious weight training and running. By adopting this rigorous routine, he joined the varsity squad during his junior year and ultimately secured All-District recognition. By his senior year, he became a standout recruit, leading a defense that allowed fewer than eight points per game. His performance earned him a spot as one of the top 300 recruits nationally and a selection as the 25th-best defensive tackle overall, attracting offers from elite programs like Alabama and Notre Dame before he chose the University of Texas.
At Texas, Ojomo spent five seasons developing into a reliable defensive tackle. He redshirted as a true freshman in 2018 and became a full-time starter in 2020. By his fifth year in 2022, he reached career highs with 32 tackles and three sacks. After being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft, he transitioned to the professional level. He solidified his journey by appearing in 17 games during the 2024 season, culminating in a performance in Super Bowl LIX, where he recorded two tackles in a 40–22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.
