How an assistant director mastered the art of the Telugu action comedy
In short: From writing sharp dialogue to directing massive box office hits, Anil Ravipudi has redefined the modern Telugu entertainer. Discover how a B.Tech graduate transformed from a behind-the-sscreen writer into a powerhouse director of high-energy, family-oriented cinema.
Born on 23 November 1982 in the Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, Anil Ravipudi’s path to cinematic success was built on a foundation of technical training and apprenticeship. After earning his B.Tech from Vignan college in 2005, he entered the film industry by serving as an assistant to his uncle, P. A. Arun Prasad. This early period was defined by his work as a dialogue writer, contributing to films such as Sankham in 2009 and Kandireega in 2011, and co-writing scripts for titles like Masala and Aagadu.
Ravipudi’s directorial career began in 2015 with the action comedy Pataas, a debut that earned him the SIIMA Award for Best Debut Director in Telugu. He quickly established a signature style through a string of successful projects, including Supreme in 2016 and Raja The Great in 2017. His work often blends fast-paced humor and action with deeper themes, such as the importance of women in society and the intricacies of human relationships. His film F2: Fun and Frustration (2019) even earned a place in the Indian Panorama section of the 50th IFFI.
As his career progressed, Ravipudi moved toward large-scale family entertainers. His film Sarileru Neekevvaru, released in 2020, achieved significant box office numbers, while Bhagvanth Kesari in 2023 earned him the prestigious National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu. He has also maintained a prolific partnership with producer Dil Raju, who produced four of his hits. Most recently, his 2025 release Sankranthiki Vasthunam became a massive financial success, setting records as the highest-grossing solo film for actor Venkatesh and the most profitable comedy in Telugu cinema history.
