A promising AFL career cut short by the persistent, invisible shadow of concussion
In short: Angus Brayshaw was a top-tier AFL talent, drafted third overall in 2014. He reached the pinnacle of the sport, winning a premiership with Melbourne in 2021. Yet, his career was defined by a recurring, dangerous struggle with head injuries, ultimately forcing his retirement in early 2024 at age 28.
Born into a prominent sporting family, Brayshaw was identified as an elite prospect early, earning a scholarship with the AIS-AFL Academy. His junior career was decorated with accolades, including All-Australian selection and the MCC Chairman's Medal. Recruited by the Melbourne Football Club in 2014, he made an immediate impact, finishing fifth in the AFL Rising Star award during his 2015 debut season. Recruiters initially likened his fearless style of play to Geelong captain Joel Selwood, noting his natural leadership and physical presence.
However, Brayshaw’s trajectory was frequently interrupted by a series of concussions. In 2016 and 2017, he suffered four concussions within a single twelve-month period, leading to extended absences and even a brief period wearing a protective helmet. Despite these setbacks, he reached significant heights in 2018, averaging a career-high 26.1 disposals and finishing third in the prestigious Brownlow Medal. His resilience was rewarded in 2021 when he played a key role in Melbourne’s premiership victory, ending the club's 57-year drought.
The end of his career arrived following a controversial incident during the 2023 Qualifying Final. After being struck in the head by Collingwood player Brayden Maynard, Brayshaw was substituted off and missed the subsequent semi-final. Although he participated in the following preseason, the cumulative impact of his concussion history proved insurmountable. He announced his retirement in February 2024, just two weeks before the start of the season, marking the end of a 167-game career that showcased both immense skill and the sobering physical realities of elite contact sports.
