From the family farm to the rugby world stage: the resilient rise of Angus Crichton
In short: Born in the Riverina region to a cattle farmer, Angus Crichton has navigated the intense pressures of professional rugby league. His journey involves championship victories, high-profile transfers, and a courageous, public battle with a significant mental health diagnosis.
Angus Crichton’s path to the Sydney Roosters began in the town of Young, New South Wales. Raised on a family farm, his athletic lineage is evident; his father, Charlie, was an Australian Schoolboys representative in the 1980s. Crichton’s early years were spent playing rugby union for the Young Yabbies before moving to Sydney in 2009 to attend Scots College. During his time there, he was a standout performer, helping the 1st XV secure the AAGPS premiership in 2013 and playing a key role in an undefeated championship season the following year.
His transition to professional rugby league saw him move through the ranks of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, where he made his NRL debut in 2016. A breakout 2017 season, featuring a hat-trick against the Gold Coast Titans, eventually led to a high-stakes move to the Roosters in 2019. This transfer was not without drama; during his debut against his former club, he was famously called a "traitor" by Souths player Cody Walker. Despite such friction, Crichton achieved significant success, including a 2019 NRL Grand Final victory and a 2020 World Club Challenge win.
Beyond the field, Crichton has faced profound personal challenges. In early 2023, his family revealed he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, leading him to take an indefinite leave of absence for specialist treatment. He successfully returned to professional competition by April 2023. Looking ahead, Crichton has signaled a major career shift; after years of speculation, he signed with Rugby Australia in January 2026. He is set to join the New South Wales Waratahs in 2027, driven by a lifelong ambition to compete in the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
