In short: Most football stars follow a linear path to glory, but Anton Stach’s journey involved navigating the gritty lower tiers of German football. From regional leagues to the Bundesliga and now the Premier League, his ascent reveals the persistence required to reach the highest levels of the beautiful game.

Born in Buchholz in der Nordheide on 15 November 1998, Stach’s path was defined by incremental progress through the German football pyramid. After developing in the Werder Bremen youth academy and serving as captain for their under-16 side, he moved through various clubs, including JFV Nordwest and VfL Osnabrück. His ascent truly gained momentum in the 2017–18 season when he joined SSV Jeddeloh in the Regionalliga Nord, the fourth tier of German football.

Stach's ability to compete at high intensities was evident during his time with VfL Wolfsburg II, where he reached the promotion play-offs for the 3. Liga. His subsequent move to Greuther Fürth in the 2020–21 season proved pivotal, as he helped the club secure promotion to the Bundesliga. He later transitioned to Mainz 05, scoring his first Bundesliga goal in December 2021 against VfL Wolfsburg, and eventually joined TSG Hoffenheim in September 2023.

By the 2023–24 season, Stach had established himself as a physical force, winning 408 duels—the second-highest total in his league, trailing only Bernardo. This defensive dominance paved the way for his move to England on 22 July 2025, signing a four-year contract with Premier League side Leeds United for a reported £17 million. His impact was immediate, scoring his first goal for Leeds on 20 September against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Stach’s career is also marked by a unique family connection. During the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, his father, sports commentator Matthias Stach, provided live coverage of his matches. In a moment of high-stakes tension, Matthias famously quipped, "Don't embarrass me, son!" after Anton was substituted during a match against the Netherlands.
