In short: Ara Parseghian is immortalized for leading Notre Dame to national championships. Yet, his most enduring legacy may not be found on the football field, but in the millions of dollars raised to combat a rare, fatal genetic disease that claimed three of his grandchildren.

To many, Ara Parseghian represents the 'Era of Ara' at Notre Dame. After arriving from Northwestern in 1964, he transformed a program that had suffered five consecutive losing seasons into a national powerhouse. Over 11 seasons in South Bend, he amassed a 95-17-4 record, including national championships in 1966 and 1973. His .836 winning percentage placed him alongside legends Knute Rockne and Frank Leahy in the university's 'Holy Trinity' of coaches.

However, Parseghian’s life was defined by a different kind of struggle following his 1974 coaching retirement and subsequent broadcasting career with ABC and CBS. After the loss of three grandchildren—Michael, Marcia, and Christa—to Niemann-Pick Type C (NPC) disease, Parseghian, alongside his son Michael and daughter-in-law Cindy, founded the Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation in 1994. NPC is a devastating pediatric neurodegenerative disorder that prevents the body from properly metabolizing cholesterol, leading to fatal neurological decline.

The foundation has raised more than $45 million to fund research into the molecular mechanisms of the disease. This work has moved the needle from a condition that was once merely a 'paragraph or two' in medical textbooks to a field with active clinical trials, such as the recent enrollment of patients for the VTS-270 drug candidate. Through a partnership with Notre Dame, the foundation continues to support investigators seeking the 'silver bullet' Parseghian once hoped for, proving that his leadership extended far beyond the sidelines.
