A fatal football injury turned a simple stadium into a century-long family memorial
In short: In 1923, a routine football game ended in a tragic infection for a University of Cincinnati student. His grandfather, a wealthy industrialist, funded the completion of the school's stadium in his memory. Nearly a century later, the name Nippert remains, marking a legacy born from a single, muddy cleat wound.
On Thanksgiving Day 1923, the University of Cincinnati faced Miami University in a game played on a field described as a sea of mud. During the match, James Gamble Nippert, a law student and the team's center, suffered a cleat wound to his leg. Because the injury was obscured by mud, he continued to play until the final whistle, unaware of the severity of the gash. At the time, antibiotics like penicillin and sulfa drugs were not yet in common use, leaving the wound vulnerable to infection.
Nippert’s condition deteriorated rapidly after he returned to his family home. He was eventually moved to Christ Hospital for a blood transfusion, but he passed away on Christmas Day 1923. His death certificate identified the cause as septicemia resulting from the football injury. His grandfather, James N. Gamble—the inventor of Ivory Soap and son of a Procter & Gamble cofounder—was devastated by the loss. He pledged $250,000 to complete the university's stadium, stipulating that the facility include a fully equipped dispensary to ensure immediate medical care for future student-athletes.
The James Gamble Nippert Memorial Stadium was officially dedicated on November 8, 1924. While the stadium has undergone numerous expansions and renovations over the decades, including the addition of permanent grandstands and locker rooms, the name has endured as a tribute to the fallen player. The Nippert family maintained a deep connection to the university, with Jimmy’s brother, Louis, and his wife, Louise Dieterle Nippert, later becoming major benefactors for the institution and the broader Cincinnati community, cementing a legacy that began with a tragic accident on the gridiron.
