Living under a bridge is for those who refuse to be indebted to society
In short: In the Arakawa district of Tokyo, a community of "denpa-san" thrives beneath the arches. Led by a self-proclaimed 620-year-old kappa, these eccentric residents live by their own rules, far from the rigid expectations of the corporate world and the strict family codes of the city above.
The series follows Kou Ichinomiya, a 22-year-old university student and heir to the Ichinomiya corporation. Raised under a strict family rule to never be indebted to another person, Kou's life is upended when he nearly drowns in the Arakawa River after being attacked by bullies. He is rescued by Nino, a girl who claims to be a Venusian, and finds himself trapped by his own principles: to settle the debt of his life, he must enter a relationship with her.
This decision leads Kou to a makeshift village under the bridge, a sanctuary for those considered outsiders. The community is a collection of colorful characters, from Sister, a British war veteran who holds rapid-fire Sunday masses, to Shiro, a man obsessed with never stepping on white lines. Even the village leadership is unconventional; the chief is a man in a green kappa costume who uses the guise of preparing for a trip to Venus to convince residents to build him a villa.
The narrative explores the tension between societal norms and personal identity. While Kou struggles to adapt to the nonsensical happenings of the bridge, the residents demonstrate a unique form of resilience. Whether it is a singer struggling to write original songs or a former office worker living in a cardboard home, the inhabitants of Arakawa prioritize their own eccentricities over the crushing weight of social obligation.
