The basketball club that briefly became more popular than football
In short: In the late 1980s, a Greek basketball team achieved such cultural dominance that it shifted the nation's sporting priorities. Streets emptied and cinemas offered discounted tickets as fans tuned in to watch a flashy, entertainment-oriented style of play that transformed basketball from a niche sport into a national obsession.
Founded in 1922 (eight years after its parent multi-sport club), Aris B.C. became a cornerstone of Greek athletics. While the sport was introduced to Greece in 1919, Aris helped establish its local presence early on, winning five regional championships between 1926 and 1930. The club's rise to national prominence began in earnest in 1979 when they won their first modern-era Greek League title, sparked by the coaching of Giannis Ioannidis and the arrival of Nikos Galis.
The 'Galis era' (1978–1993) redefined the sport's identity. Despite initial concerns over his height, Galis became a superstar who popularized a high-octane, entertainment-focused style. Under the leadership of figures like Panagiotis Giannakis and with financial backing from Akis Michailides, Aris dominated the late 1980s, winning seven consecutive Greek League championships between 1985 and 1991. During this peak, they achieved an unparalleled feat of 80 consecutive wins in the Greek League.
Aris' influence extended to the European stage, where they reached the Final Four of the FIBA European Champions Cup for three consecutive years (1988–1990). They secured major titles including the FIBA European Cup in 1992–93 and the FIBA Korać Cup in 1996–97. Their legacy is cemented by their status as one of only two teams to have never been relegated from the Greek First Division, a testament to a century of competitive endurance.
The club's impact was so profound that it briefly overtook football as Greece's most popular sport. This cultural phenomenon was fueled by the 'Galis-Giannakis' backcourt combination, which also formed the backbone of the Greek national team, helping secure gold at EuroBasket 1987 and silver in 1989.
