In short: Before it was a professional powerhouse in Istanbul, Turkish basketball began with a single physical education teacher. In 1911, Ahmet Robenson introduced the game to Galatasaray High School students, laying the groundwork for a club that would eventually dominate the national scene for decades.

Basketball first appeared in Turkey in 1904 at Robert College, introduced by an American physical education teacher. However, it was Ahmet Robenson who played a pivotal role in its popularization. A physical education teacher at Galatasaray High School, Robenson introduced the sport to his students in 1911. His influence was so profound that he later served as the president of Galatasaray S.K., cementing the club's deep-rooted connection to the sport.

The club's basketball department became a dominant force in the mid-20th century. The team enjoyed a period of significant success in the 1940s, followed by titles in the 1950s and 1960s. They remained competitive throughout the 1970s and secured two more championships in 1985 and 1986, along with a title in 1990. While the club faced a period of struggle during much of the 1990s and 2000s, they reclaimed the Turkish championship in 2013.

Today, Galatasaray S.K. is a professional mainstay in the Turkish Basketball Super League and the Basketball Champions League. Their trophy cabinet includes 18 Turkish championships across various historical formats, including 5 in the Turkish Super League and 11 in the former Turkish Basketball Championship. On the international stage, the club reached a milestone in 2016 by defeating SIG Strasbourg 78–67 to win their first EuroCup championship. Most recently, in the 2024–25 season, they reached their second European final in the FIBA-organized Basketball Champions League, falling to Unicaja Málaga in Athens.
